This short chapter is a quick review of intestinal obstruction for final year medical students.
I will discuss; a definition, review the basics of intestinal obstruction (pathophysiology, causes), explain what to look for in the history and on clinical examination, outline a differential diagnosis, give some information on investigation and treatment. I will also outline a clinically useful algorithm to go through when you encounter a patient with possible intestinal obstruction.
As usual, look to your textbooks and your patients for more information on this important topic.
