The main function of the erect chest x-ray is to look for free gas under the diaphragm. Unfortunately a gas filled loop of bowel can sometimes slip upwards and give the false impression of free gas under the right hemi-diaphragm. If there is doubt and time an abdominal CT scan will usually clarify the situation.
