Open loop obstruction

A band adhesion across the ileum following for instance, appendicitis with appendisectomy will result in an open loop obstruction. The proximal bowel will distend and the patient can decompress this by vomiting or the clinician may aid the patient by passage of a nasogastric tube. The important point here is that the distension will stop when the bowel is decompressed. The bowel is less likely therefore to perforate.
