Contrast enema

A contrast enema is a very useful study to differentiate mechanical colonic obstruction from colonic pseudo-obstruction. Most surgeons advocate Gastrografin as the preferred contrast agent, they feel that it is the safest agent. Several radiologists prefer to use dilute Barium.

The contrast enema may reveal an unsuspected sigmoid volvulus with the typical `Tip of Ace of Spades' appearance.
