Protein

Proteins are broken down by pepsin and enterokinases. Small peptides and amino acids are absorbed. There are specific transporters for specific amino-acids.

Progressive loss of protein will result in a fall in plasma albumin and a rise in globulin. The oncotic pressure drops and generalised oedema (anasarca) ensues. Fatty infiltration of the liver occurs.
