High Bicarbonate (HCO \ensuremath {_3^-})

As is shown in table 10, a high bicarbonate is characteristic of both metabolic alkalosis and respiratory acidosis. These may be clinically differentiated by their presentation. If their is doubt check the pH ; acidemia indicated respiratory acidosis and alkalemia metabolic alkalosis.
