Causes of end stage renal failure

1. Glomerulonephritis (including IgA nephropathy)
2. Pyelonephritis
3. Polycystic kidney disease
4. Diabetic nephropathy
5. Shrinking kidney
6. Interstitial nephritis
7. Reflux nephropathy
8. Nephrosclerosis
9. Alport syndrome

In the United States Diabetic nephropathy is the commonest cause of ESRF.

It would appear that certain causes of ESRF are associated with a poorer prognosis than others. Examples of adverse prognosistic diagnoses include, amyloid, multiple myeloma and renal cell cancer. Of the common causes of ESRF diabetes is associated with the worst prognosis.
