Tom Starzl

A piooneer of transplantation surgery. He worked on models of transplantation in the late 1950s and developed the renal and liver transplantation programs in . In 1958 he was able to produce a dog model of liver transplantation with short term survival. In 1963 he showed that the combination of steroids with azathioprine improved results in renal transplantation. He subsequently moved to Denver 1975, then Pittsburg and set up the transplant programs there. He was one of the first to develope a successful liver transplant program.
