Roy Calne

A surgeon from London, he took up Dempsters [SDW63] dog model, and added in 6 mercapto purine to show a marked improvement in survival of the graft and a major damping down of the lymphocytic infiltrate that was usually observed.

Then Calne went to the United States to the Peter Bent Bringham hospital in Boston to work with Joseph Murray , (see 2.2.19)and to get some more drugs from Dr George Hitchings at Burrows-Wellcome.

Following his returnn to the United Kingdom Roy Calne was appointed Professor of Surgery at the University of Cambridge. He set up a liver transplantation program there.

His labarotory discovered the importance of cycylosporine.

He was subsequently knighted.
