Prognosis when there is a small bowel stoma with no residual colon or colon not in continutiy

If there is a moderate length of colon remaining consider reanastamosis if possible and then manage as per colon in continuity.

When the length of remaining jejeuno-ileum is less than 50 cm the patients will require TPN for life. Fluid and electrolyte balance is difficult and chronic nutritional deficiencies common. These patients should be considered for intestinal transplantation.

When the lenght of the remaining jejeuno-ileum is 50-100 cm many patients will not require parental nutrition but fluid and electrolyte deficiences are common. They in the main require parenteral fluids.

When the length of remaining jejeuno-ileum is greater then 101 cm the patient just needs to be observed and treated with occasional parenteral fluids to avoid renal dysfunction and failure.
