During the initial phase every effort should be made to perserve as much bowel
as possible. Further laparotomies and bowel resections are frequently
necessary and intraabdominal abscesses and fistulae are common.
Early enteral nutrition is encouraged and supplementary feeding via the
parenteral route is required.
