Gastric hypersecretion

A higher than normal pH in the small bowel results in lack of the intestinal feedback to cut off gastrin secretion. This increases the risk of stress ulceration. The main period during which gastric hypersecretion occurs is during the first 3-6 months.

The pH of the small bowel may be altered by the acid gastric output so that pancreatic enzymes which work best at neutral pH are inactivated.
