Puborectalis maintains an acute angle between the rectum and anal
canal
|
One of the main functions of the anus is to preserve continence. This
important function is governed by many factors;
- The nature of the stool, a totally liquid stool as seen in
diarrhoea, may result in incontinence in anyone
- The rate of delivery of the stool
- The compliance and volume of the rectum
- The intactness of the `sampling'
mechnism
- The function of the sphincters around the anal canal
- The acute angle between the anal canal and the rectum
- The function of the anal cushions
