One of the main functions of the anus is to preserve continence. This important function is governed by many factors;

• The nature of the stool, a totally liquid stool as seen in diarrhoea, may result in incontinence in anyone
• The rate of delivery of the stool
• The compliance and volume of the rectum
• The intactness of the `sampling' mechnism
• The function of the sphincters around the anal canal
• The acute angle between the anal canal and the rectum
• The function of the anal cushions
