Introduction

Fluids and electrolytes are very important, in some patients due care to fluid and electrolyte balance may mean the difference between survival and death. This section summaries normal fluid values and composition, gastrointestinal secretions and disorders of electrolytes and acid base balance.

The surgical intern is often expected to prescribe fluid and electrolyte replacement therapy in ill patients. This is an important job, and should not be taken lightly.
