Requirements: Volume

Table 7: The Holliday-Segar method to calculate normal fluid volume requirements
Volume of fluid (ml) /(kg body weight) per hour
Up to 10 kg 4 mls/kg
From 10 - 20 kg 2 mls/kg
In excess of 20 kg 1 ml/kg for every kg after

Holliday-Segar method i.e. 70 kg person, see table 7.

\begin{eqnarray*}
10\: kg\: @ 4\: mls/kg & = & 40\: ml/hr \\
10\: kg @ 2\: mls/kg & = & 20\: ml/hr \\
50\: kg @ 1\: ml/kg & = & 50\: ml/hr \\
\end{eqnarray*}

Thus the hourly requirement is $40\: ml + 20\: ml + 50\: ml =
110\: ml/hour$

An alternative formula for adults is 35 ml/kg/day

Thus for a 70 kg person $70 \times 35 = 2450\: ml$ which is a rate of 102 ml/hr.
