Intra cellular compartment

Clinical assessment of the ICF is difficult. The brain is the main organ whose function may be disturbed by changes in the ICF . Headache and confusion may occur with either expansion or contraction of the ICF .

Expansion of the ICF may cause brain swelling with consequent rise in intracranial pressure and herniation of the brain through the foramen magnum, this is termed coneing and is usually fatal.
