Pan Procto Colectomy:

Pan procto-colectomy means that the entire colon, rectum and anal canal are removed. An end ileostomy is formed to discharge the small bowel content onto the surface.

The advantage of this procedure is that the risk of cancer from the colon and rectum are eliminated.

The disadvantages of this procedure are that excision of the rectum and anal canal increase the morbidity of the operation. Removal of the sphincters means that a restorative procedure is not possible and the patient requires a permanent ileostomy.
