Enoxaparin (Clexane) 40 millegrammes SC OD
All patients should now get 40 millegrammes Enoxaparin as 20 millegrammes is not effective. Commence at
the time of admission. The patient MUST get Enoxaparin preop.
TED compression stockings if obesity, chronic venous disease, or varicose
veins. NOT in ischaemic limbs.
`high risk' includes
- obesity
- varicose veins
- previous deep venous thrombosis or pulmonary embolism
- patients on oral contraceptive pill or hormone replacement therapy
(ideally should be discontinued 6 weeks preop)
- surgery for abdominal malignancy
- pelvic surgery and orthopedic surgery
- surgery 3 hours duration
