- Use sterile technique and remember reduction of foreskin
- Do not put in latex type Foley catheter if the catheter is for long term
use, instead choose a silastic catheter
- Use plenty of lubrication, ideally with anaesthetic jelly
- Don't force catheter in, beware of causing urethral damage
- Don't inflate the balloon until urine has drained into the tube, it may
be necessary to aspirate the anaesthetic lubricant from the catheter before
the urine will appear, or a gentle push suprapubically may be required in
paralysed patients
- Ensure record of residual volume post catheterization
- When removing long standing catheter, antibiotic cover may be required
(Gentamycin 80 millegrammes IM STAT dose prior to catheter removal)
- Document insertion and removal of catheter in patient's notes.
