Administration fluid guidelines

Existing Deficit
History is not main source, examination helps. BEWARE urea and electrolytes may be normal

Maintenance
basal requirements, maintenance fluid requirements consists of 4 mls/kg for the first 10 kg of bodyweight, 2 mls/kg for the second and 1 ml/kg for each additional kg

Ongoing Loss
e.g. NG losses, vomiting and diarrhoea, drains, bleeding, 3rd space losses in bowel obstruction, increase requirements in pyrexia and tachypnoea etc NG losses replace with normal saline, below duodenum with Hartman's
