Catheter-Related Sepsis

Central venous catheters should normally be removed or resited after 7 days, or earlier if catheter-related sepsis is suspected. The incidence of sepsis is increased with the duration of catheterisation. Hickman or other tunneled catheters may be left in situ for longer periods of time, It is not recommended that catheters be changed over a guide wire as it has been shown that this increases the risk of bloodstream infections. However this is acceptable if catheter changes expose the patient to dangerous complications.
