Vascular cell adhesion molecule one, VCAM-1 (CD106) weighs 100 to 110 Kd and
is located on endothelial cells. It is the ligand for VLA-4, a
integrin expressed on leucocytes. Expression of VCAM-1 increases adhesion of
lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils and basophils. Melanoma cells use VCAM-1
to adhere to the endothelium and VCAM-1 appears to play a role in the
recruitment of monocytes to atherosclerotic plaque.
